German Pellets has now dropped plans presented in summer 2010 to build a pellet plant in the Aquitaine region of southwest France. According to the managing partner Peter H. Leibold, the windthrows caused by Cyclone Klaus on 24 January 2009 and the damage sustained through beetle-infected timber in subsequent years resulted in a significant reduction in timber supplies in the region. From to-day's perspective, a sustainable supply for a pellet plant in the Aquitaine with originally planned production capacity of roughly 250,000 t/year is no longer guaranteed. In addition, on account of the lower level of raw-material supply, the raw-material price in the region has recently shown a considerable increase, so that local pellet production and the shipping of pellets to bulk consumers in other European countries are no longer economically viable.
