Surteco’s paper operations experience turnaround

23.11.2017 −

German Surteco booked a slight improvement in revenues from its paper operations during the third quarter. Revenues were 3.0% higher than last year at €92.1m. These activities experienced a 9.5% slide in first-quarter revenues to €96.7m and even suffered double-digit decline of 10.5% to €91.5m in the second quarter. First-half revenues fell 10.0% to €188.2m. The reversal in fortunes encountered in the third quarter means that the nine-month period ended with a 6.1% downturn to €280.3m. Some €70.3m of this sum was booked in Germany, €139.2m in the rest of Europe, €63.6m in North and South America and €7.2m in the Asia-Pacific region.

All product groups played their part in the somewhat better performance in the third quarter. However, revenues from printed décor paper were still 21% lower than last year after nine months; the first half of the year had ended with a 22% dive.

On the other hand, impregnated paper and pre-impregnated finish foils made up for quite a bit of their losses by the end of September. Revenues from impregnated paper slipped 6% after falling 9% in the first quarter and 10% in the first half combined. The situation for pre-impregnated paper improved again. After declining 18% in the first quarter and 14% in the first half of the year, revenues were down just 7% after nine months.

Paper-based edgebanding revenues were back at last year’s level after nine months following a 2% drop in the first six months. Revenues from fully impregnated finish foils were up 8%; an upswing of as much as 37% in release paper revenues was booked.
