Demand for US hardwood lumber has slackened again on the German market in the second quarter. After the first quarter was tendentially assessed as positive by the majority of German importers and agents and sales figures have exceeded last year’s level as a rule, the mood in the industry has switched to a certain amount of disillusionment again lately. Only in a few isolated cases is there any mention of good and steady business. Most companies are reporting, however, that April and May failed to live up to the expectations. This applies above all to receipts of orders. Although the outflow of older contracts is largely going through smoothly, the timber trade and industrial customers are evidently now holding back with new orders considerably more resolutely than at the start of the year. Market players attribute this development to customers’ stocks having built up well over the last few months, which is why there is no great need for new deliveries at the moment.
