EU tropical timber imports stagnate at last year’s level

EU tropical timber imports have exceeded last year’s level by merely 1 % across all product categories, reaching 2.145 m m³ (roundwood equivalent) in total. However, according to ITTO, substantial differences could be observed both between individual product groups and among individual EU countries. In this vein, a decline in imports of tropical logs, mouldings, plywood, deck-ing and window scantlings is pitted against a rise in imports of sawn timber, veneers and flooring. Within the EU, predominantly tropical timber imports into the Netherlands have recovered, swelling by 13 %. Imports into Great Britain (+7 %) also saw con-siderable growth on a year-over-year basis. In contrast, deliveries to France (-4 %) and Belgium (-5 %), the two most important tropical timber markets within the EU with regard to quantities, have slipped respectively. Deliveries to Germany dropped by 9 % during the first months of 2014, after two relatively strong years in 2012 and 2013.
