Building permits decline for third consecutive month

In July building permits for dwellings in new residential buildings in Germany fell by 9.2% vis à vis the comparative month of last year to 27,410 units. The negative development recorded in May (-7.9%) and June (-4.0%) thus further intensified.

According to figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on 19 September, in the case of multi-family houses construction of 15,919 living units (-9.0%) was approved. For detached houses (-1.3% to 8,694 units) and living units in semi-detached houses (-0.7% to 2,054 units) a downward trend was also recorded.

Accumulated over the first seven months, approvals for dwelling units in new residential buildings were 4.1% below the comparative figure of last year at 169,788 units. Approvals in semi-detached (12,332 units) and multi-family houses houses (99,317 units) decreased at the same rate. The number of approved detached houses, at 53,231 units, remained virtually the same by comparison with last year. In the context of building measures relating to existing buildings, 23,314 approvals were granted. A total of 196,437 dwellings (-3.4%) were approved in new and existing residential and non-residential buildings.
