NAHB reckons with further increase in building starts

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates that residential-building activity in the USA in the current year will again show slight year-on-year growth. The association explains its favourable forecast with the continuing recovery of the economy and greater willingness to buy among potential house builders. The US Census Bureau reports that residential-building starts in 2014 have shown year-on-year growth of 5.3% to a total of 1.089m units. That figure includes building starts for 728,000 detached houses, representing an increase of 7.9%. Building starts for apartments in multiple-dwelling units have remained virtually stable at 339,000 units. The trend in building approvals was less dynamic than that for building activity, with an in-crease of 1% to 1.052m. Of that number, 667,000 detached houses were approved, representing a year-on-year rise of 8.1%. In contrast, approvals for apartments in two- to four-family houses declined by 10% to 27,000 units. The number of approvals for apartments in multiple-dwelling units, at 338,000, was down by 9.9% year on year.
