Housing construction approvals decline by 26%

In January, at a total of 21,600 approvals, the number of housing construction approvals was 7,700 units - or 26.0% - lower than the same month last year. The number of approvals granted for living units in new buildings as well as for new living units in existing buildings has thus furthermore fallen to the lowest level since February 2015.

According to data published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) the number of building approvals for detached houses declined by 25.5%, or 1,700, to 4,900 approvals. In the case of semi-detached houses, the number of approved living units almost halved, by 48.4% or 1,200 units to 1,300. Regarding multi-family houses – the most significant building type in terms of approval figures – the number of approved living units also declined significantly, by 28.6% or 4,600 units to 11,500.
