The increase in German furniture imports observed in January and February was further reinforced in March when a growth rate of 10.1% was recorded, according to information published by the Association of the German Furniture Industry. In January imports had grown by 8.2% and this was followed by an increase of 2.2% in February. In this context, a decline of 15.4% was recorded in the category of kitchen furniture. For March, however, the statistics now show a significant increase of 27.1% for kitchen furniture. Imports of office and shop furniture also rose significantly in March. Imports of office furniture exceeded the previous year’s figure by 23.8%. Imports of shop furniture grew by 18.6%. Imports of upholstered furniture increased by 18.4% and the increase rates concerning living room, dining and bedroom furniture (+12.4%) as well as miscellaneous furniture (+19.6%) were also in the double-figure range. Imports of other seating furniture were slightly higher (+2.4%) than in the previous year. Imports of mattresses, by contrast, declined significantly by 16.8%.
