SCM Group expands portfolio for CLT processing

SCM Group has added the “Area XL” CNC machining centre to its existing product portfolio of plants for processing cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements. Like the existing units in the Area series, the gantry-type system has five axes, but it has been upgraded with regard to the BSP dimensions that can be machined, the technically possible material removal, and extensive automation of the processes in the elements’ movement and positioning phases. Amongst other upgrades, the electrically-operated spindle has been geared to a performance of 63 kW in continuous operation and high torque. According to SCM, this enables the system to handle workpieces with a length of up to 16 m and a width up to 3.6 m as well as a thickness of up to 400 mm. The plant has a total of up to 60 tool stations, including two sawblades for every working assembly.

The first Area XL plant was installed in the fourth quarter of 2020 at the new CLT works at the Sokol facility of AFK Sistema’s Segezha Group of Segezha. The works commenced trial operation in October and was officially inaugurated on 25 February. SCM says it has sold another Area XL to an unnamed Canadian buyer. Concrete negotiations are also still underway with a potential customer in Germany.
