German pallet production stable at 2019 level

At 110.4m units, the number of box pallets and flat wooden pallets produced in Germany in 2020 was virtually the same as in 2019. Thus, despite the effects of the corona pandemic, production remained above the 110m units mark for the fourth consecutive year. Flat pallets accounted for 100.7m units (-0.5%) and box pallets for 9.7m units (+4.3%). The value of total production, by contrast, fell to €835.6m - representing a decline of 6.0%. At €754.9m, the notional production value per flat pallet averaged €7.50 per unit, corresponding to a decline of 5.8%.

According to the annual report of the German Federal Association of Wood Packaging, Pallets and Export Packaging (HPE) published on 27 April, the volume of timber used in crate production - which is heavily dependent on the German economy’s exports - declined by 17.2% to 1.443m m³ and was thus only slightly above the 2014 level; in terms of value, a drop of 15.3% was recorded. A decline was also recorded concerning the production volume of cable drums, down by 13.3% to a total of 157,873m³.
