AEG begins commissioning of CoalSwitch plant

On 29 December 2017 Active Energy Group (AEG), which is which is quoted on the London Stock Exchange, carried out initial tests for production of biomass fuels using the CoalSwitch process on the pilot plant in Salt Lake City, Utah. Commissioning of the production line, which has a capacity of 5t/h and 35,000t/annum, is to be completed over the course of the coming weeks. The original schedule has thus been delayed slightly. At the time the investment decision was announced at the end of 2016, AEG expected production to begin in the third quarter of 2017.

Upon completion of process certification, the pilot plant will have produced, for example, 450t CoalSwitch pellets for Rocky Mountain Power. According to AEG, the energy supplier is preparing for commercial use of biomass fuels at its existing coal-fuelled power station in Castle Dale, Utah. Initial tests on an industrial scale at this location are already planned for the beginning of this year.
