Mercer to expand Spokane gluelam plant by 2024

Over the next two years, Mercer Mass Timber, which belongs to Canadian Mercer International plans to expand its US-based CLT plant in Spokane to include production of glue-laminated lumber, and also to increase CLT production.

Mercer has quoted an investment of US$50m to local newspapers. This corresponds to the purchase price Mercer paid last year for the plant formerly belonging to US/Indian construction company Katerra.

Currently, corresponding certification procedures for glue-laminated timber are still underway. The first quantities of glue-laminated timber are to be produced in the course of the summer. As of July, the number of employees is to increase by 30 to 80. The additional staff will work, for example, in the extra production shift also planned for July. In its business report for the first quarter, Mercer already referred to smaller investments intended to expand the CLT product portfolio in Spokane.
