Finnish UPM-Kymmene is poised to make a significant increase in manufacturing capacity at its Estonian birch plywood mill in Otepää by the middle of 2016 with the installation of another veneer and plywood line. Capacity is set to nearly double from 50,000 m³ per year at present to approximately 90,000 m³. At the same time, the firm is to build a new biomass power plant with a capacity of 18 MW to replace several existing boilers run on oil and wood. The new power plant will mainly incinerate production residues from plywood manufacturing, including bark, wood chips and sanding dust. UPM-Kymmene is to invest about €40m in the entire project, according to a statement published on 23 April. Its workforce is to increase from 175 at present to roughly 215.
