Finnish plywood exports down in first 11 months

15.02.2019 −

Finland exported 2.3% less plywood between January and November compared to the corresponding period in the preceding year, according to figures compiled by the Finnish Forest Industries Federation (FFIF). The country had shipped 942,000 m³ in the eleven-month period. The average export price was 1.1% higher than in the same stretch in 2017, meaning that the total value of exports was just 1.2% lower at €521m.

Birch plywood and softwood plywood/LVL exports headed in mixed directions, as they had in the first half of the year. Birch plywood exports were 9.2% lower at 319,000 m³ compared to the corresponding period in the preceding year. A 3.9% increase in average export prices meant that the downturn in value terms was not quite as pronounced, falling 5.6% to €273m. The FFIF had reported a 1.7% increase in softwood plywood/LVL exports to 622,000 m³ based on customs figures. The average export price was 2.5% higher than the same stretch in 2017, boosting the total value of exports 4.2% to €248m. Softwood plywood/LVL exports had been 8% higher than the prior-year period after six months. Birch plywood exports had already fallen 9% during the first six months of 2018.
