Finland: another downturn in plywood manufacturing

13.11.2020 −

After enjoying a somewhat stronger second quarter, Finnish plywood manufacturers faced another bigger fall in output in the third quarter. According to statistics from the Finnish Forest Industries Federation (FFIF) production had plunged by 35.1% in a year-on-year comparison to 200,000 m³ in the first quarter in the wake of strike-related disruption in January. Output then rebounded to 280,000 m³ in the second quarter but was still 6.3% shy of the same stretch in 2019.

A downswing in the birch plywood business caused by the coronavirus crisis was partly offset by a better performance for softwood plywood. The FFIF reported preliminary output of 240,000 m³ in the third quarter. This translates into a 16.0% slump compared with the same period last year. Looking at the first nine months combined, production was 19.3% lower at 710,000 m³.
