Jyväskylä plywood mill to close for good in late July

31.07.2020 −

UPM-Kymmene is to permanently close its Jyväskylä plywood mill today, which has an installed annual capacity of 100,000 m³ of birch and spruce plywood. According to Mika Sillanpää, Executive Vice President (EVP) of the UPM Plywood division, a decision has yet to be made about the site’s future use. Parts of the machinery installed there will continue to be used or stored for later use, with the rest of its machinery to be scrapped.

UPM-Kymmene had announced this divestment decision in early June. At that time, the mill had employed 167 people including temporary workers. After a few employees switched to other UPM-Kymmene sites in recent weeks, the workforce will decrease by 147 upon the mill’s permanent closure, according to a press release issued on 21 July. The shortfall created by the closure is to be offset by making plywood at other sites instead in the future.
