US housing starts at positive level in January

In the twelve months up to and including January, US housing starts, adjusted to account for seasonal influences, increased by 9.7% vis à vis the preceding month to a total of 1.326m units. In the twelve months up to December housing starts had declined by 6.9% vis-à-vis the previous month.

According to the statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on 16 February, housing starts for detached houses increased by 3.7% to 877,000 units up to and including January. In buildings with five or more dwelling units, housing starts increased more significantly by 19.7% to 431,000 units.

In the twelve month period up to January a total of 1.396m approvals has been granted for the construction of dwellings. This corresponds to an increase of 7.4% by comparison with the preceding month. Approvals granted in December remained stable vis-à-vis November. In January the decline by 1.7% to 866,000 in approvals for detached houses could be compensated by an increase in approvals for dwellings in two to four-family houses (+37.8% to 51,000 units) and in multi-family houses (+25.4% to 479,000 units).
