Growth in North American lumber output stalled

23.06.2014 −

The long and hard North American winter had an impact not only on the region’s consumption of lumber and panels, but also on production as mills struggled with frozen logs and processing equipment. Total North American softwood lumber production in the first quarter of 2014 at 32.3 million cubic meters while 3% above the fourth quarter of 2013, was essentially unchanged from the year-earlier production pace of 32.2 million m³. Lumber output in each of Canada and the US were similarly affected. Consequently, US and Canadian production shares were largely unchanged, with the US accounting for 55% of the North American total and Canada for 45%.
