Swedish exports to China down by half in September

21.12.2018 −

At -8 % to a total of 1.019m m³, Sweden’s exports of softwood timber and planed products in September turned out to be roughly 8 % lower than in the same month of last year. With the exception of North America and Oceania, deliveries to the other, separately recorded regions failed to match the respective figures of a year earlier. 644,400 m³ were delivered to buyers in Europe, which equates to a sharp reduction of 10 %. According to the provisional foreign-trade statistics published by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustrierna) of Stockholm, reductions of 7 % and 32 % occurred in deliveries to Africa at 160,700 m³, to the Middle East at 37,300 m³, and to Asia at 115,500 m³; exports to China alone slumped below a year earlier by 50 %.

From the perspective of Swedish exporters, a reduction of 3 % occurred for the nine-month period to 9.384m m³. Whereas the export reductions suffered on the African markets in 2017 were able to be at least slightly compensated for with an increase of 5 % to 1.491m m³ thanks to a substantial increase in Algeria (+150 % to 400,100 m³), exports to Asia remained well short of last year’s figure at -18 % to a total of 1.260m m³. 526,800 m³ were exported to China including Hong Kong, and 527,100 m³ to Japan, equating to reductions of 20 % and 14 %, respectively, on last year’s figures.
