Stora Enso suspending cutting at Uimaharju sawmill

Stora Enso is halting cutting operations at its Uimaharju facility for two months to start with. Production at the works geared to an annual capacity of 240,000 m³ will be standing still from the beginning of November to the beginning of January 2020. The temporary closure affects roughly 60 employees, 40 of whom have been made redundant. According to information from a company spokeswoman, this is the group’s response to persisting difficult underlying conditions on the sawn softwood markets. Prior to the decision, the group had already announced in August its intention to examine the possibility of production cuts at its sawmills because market conditions had already been unfavourable at that time.

Stora Enso had discontinued production of thermally modified timber at the Uimaharju facility in July this year and subsequently sold the production equipment with an annual capacity of roughly 20,000 m³ to Lunawood Oy of Lahti, Finland.
