Södra sawmill Mönsterås switches to three-shift operation

The Mönsterås sawmill, which belongs to the "Södra Wood" business unit of Swedish Södra Group, will be switched from two- to three-shift operation on 1 March 2019. This will increase annual production at the site by 100,000 m³ to 440,000 m³ of sawn softwood. The additional shift will create 30 new jobs. With the production expansion announced by Södra yesterday, the cuts announced by Södra in June 2016 at the Mönsterås plant will be reversed. Over the past two years, Södra has implemented restructuring measures at its sawmill sites, including Mönsterås.

Jörgen Lindquist, President of Södra Wood, justifies the planned increase in production in Mönsterås with the continuing good demand for softwood sawn timber in the relevant sales markets and an increasing internal demand. The new cross laminated timber (CLT) plant at the Värö site is to process sawn timber from the neighbouring sawmill to 15,000 m³ CLT/year in a three-shift operation after its planned commissioning in May 2019. The resulting loss of sawn timber for external deliveries in the Värö sawmill, which is designed for 600,000 m³/year, will be offset by deliveries from Mönsterås.
