Sawnwood prices in USA lower again for seasonal reasons

05.11.2020 −

After the lateral movement that initially occurred in prices for spruce-fir-pine (SPF) assortments at the end of September, a marked downward adjustment occurred in prices on the US sawn-softwood market until the end of October. According to the results of the latest surveys by Madison’s Lumber, prices for the benchmark grade of SPF KD R/L 2x4 #2&Btr. dropped by an average of US$260 or 37 % against a week earlier to what was last around US$700/1,000 bdft ex mill. The cuts in prices for 2x6 and 2x8 assortments turned out to be even greater at -46 % and -40 %, respectively to US$650 and US$680/1,000 bdft. Seasonally slacker demand is regarded as the prime cause of the price reductions.

The latest lumber-futures are still well below the current contracts. November deliveries are currently fetching US$505/1,000 bdft, those for January US$480, and March still around US$470. Irrespective of the lower listings, the prices are still distinctly above the level that applied at the outset of the price rally in June.
