Romania: Competition authority extends investigation

12.04.2019 −

The Romanian Competition Authority has extended its investigation into illegal collusion at roundwood auctions between wood industry companies by an additional 35 to a total of 94 companies. According to a press release issued on 10 April, the competition authority has come across indications that more companies than previously assumed may be involved in the collusion at roundwood auctions conducted by the Romanian Forestry Authority. Possible price and quantity bids have been investigated since 2016. Among others, the wood industry Schweighofer SRL, Egger Romania SRL, Kronospan Romania SRL, Kronospan Sebes SA, Silva Logistic Services SRL, Alredia SRL and Lacul Codrilor SRL have been included in the investigation.

At the end of 2018, Forestar SA, Nico Paul SRL and Saniral SRL were fined a total of RON 2.315 million (equivalent to approximately € 498,000) for anti-competitive agreements for 94 roundwood lots in the Neamt Regional Forest Directorate's auction. In particular, the following penalties were imposed on the three companies: Forestar RON 1.439 million, Nico Paul SRL RON 410,696 and Saniral RON 465,313. As the accused companies had confessed to the violations of the anti-competition law in the proceedings, the sentence was reduced by 15 % compared to the originally demanded penalty.
