Mercer Timber investing another €37.5m in Friesau

The production capacity of the sawmill of Mercer Timber Products GmbH (MTP) is to be raised by 200m bdft by means of an expansion investment project to 750m bdft per year at full-load operation in future. According to a release published by Mercer International, on 5 June, the planned measures at an envisage cost of around €37.5m € include the installation of two additional sorting lines and an extension of the existing sorting line.

Modifications are also planned for the cutting line to enable short sawlog sections to be worked as well in future. Besides enlarging capacity, Mercer is also expecting the measures to reduce labour costs. The investment programme named “Phase II” is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2020.

Mercer has already initiated investment measures worth a total of US$39m at MTP for 2018 in the ongoing “Phase I”. According to information from the group, an additional planing line is being installed for a total of US$23m, which will raise the number of planing lines at the facility to three in future. A mechanical timber-sorting unit is being integrated as well, and the sorting capacity enlarged.
