Latvian exports of sawn softwood give way slightly

In the second quarter, 762,900 m³ of sawn and planed softwood lumber were exported from Latvia; this corresponds to a minus of 2 % compared to the same period of the previous year. This means that the decline of 15 % recorded in the first quarter has weakened.

According to the foreign trade statistics published by the forestry department of the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture, exports to Great Britain fell by 2 % to 272,900 m³ between April and June. Deliveries to South Korea (40,200 m³) and Germany (34,600 m³) each fell by around 16%. The export volume to Estonia remained almost unchanged at 72,000 m³. Among the relevant export markets, only the Netherlands recorded an increase (+8% to 41,400 m³).

In terms of the first six months, Latvia exported 1.366m m³ of sawn softwood worth €291.2m. While the export volume fell short of the previous year's figure by 8 %, the export value remained stable. Among others, deliveries to Great Britain (-7% to 482,000 m³), Estonia (-15% to 123,900 m³), South Korea (-12% to 74,700 m³) and Germany (-27% to 60,800 m³) decreased. Exports to the Netherlands, at 77,400 m³, were slightly higher than in the previous year.
