During the first quarter of 2018, German sawmills produced a total of 4.412 million m³ of sawn coniferous lumber, around 2.8 % more than in the same period of the previous year. While the production of spruce sawn timber increased disproportionately by 10.6 % to 3.573 million m³, the production of pine sawn timber, at a total of 613,406 m³, remained around 1.9 % below the corresponding figure for the previous year. According to preliminary production figures published by the Federal Statistical Office, other softwoods fell far short of the previous year's production. At 225,476 m³, this represents a decrease of 48.4 % compared to the first quarter of 2017.
