Georgia-Pacific Expands Sawmill and Plywood Plant

The US-American Georgia-Pacific will make investments of US$ 70m at its Gurdon/Arkansas site. The installation of a "Log Merchandiser" will improve roundwood yield. In the plywood plant, the assembly of modern scanner systems and new veneer laying lines is planned. In addition, the energy plant will also be modernized. In addition to increasing lumber and plywood capacities, the company is also striving to improve the competitiveness of the site by reducing operating costs. According to Georgia-Pacific, initial work was already carried out during the summer, and the expansion project is to be completed next year.

Georgia-Pacific acquired the sawmill and plywood mill, built in 1979, together with four other sawmill/plywood and engineered wood products sites from International Paper in 2007. In Gurdon, two expansion projects were last completed in 2016. With investments of around US$ 40m, the sawmill's capacity was increased by around 60 %. To this end, the company installed a new continuous drying chamber and a planing line and improved the plant infrastructure. A further US$10m was invested in the plywood plant. In addition to reducing the plant's emissions, the aim was also to increase capacity at that time.
