Europe: Slower growth wood-based panels production

12.07.2019 −

The European wood-based panel industry manufactured a total of 59.3m m³ last year, a year-on-year increase of 1.7%. Softboard (+5.9% to 5.2m m³) and particleboard (+2.6% to 32.0m m³) production showed disproportionately strong growth. Plywood (+1.7% to 3.2 million m³) and hardboard (+1.5% to 0.5m m³) output displayed similar trends to overall production. However, OSB (-1.6% to 6.2 million m³) and MDF/HDF (-0.5% to 12.3m m³) output took a turn for the worse.

The European Panel Federation (EPF) unveiled these slightly lowered figures compared with data published towards the middle of May at its annual general meeting in Dunblane, Scotland from 26 to 28 June. At that time, the federation had thought that production had increased 1.9% to 59.5m m³. When publishing its preliminary data, the EPF also revised comparative figures for 2017. OSB production, in particular, was raised from the sum of 5.6m m³ reported in mid-2018 to 6.3m m³; plywood output was trimmed slightly from 3.2m m³ to 3.1m m³. These corrections boosted total 2017 production from 57.6m m³ to 58.3m m³. European producers had made 55.9m m³ in 2016.
