EU halts 0.6bn € payment to Ukraine due to export ban

09.01.2018 −

The European Commission (EU Commission) will not be paying out the third and final tranche of a macro-financial assistance (MFA) package totalling 1.8bn for the Ukraine until further notice. The reason the Commission gives for its decision to halt the payment of 0.6bn € is inadequate progress with reforms.

Although the Commission recognises the advances in transparency in public sector budgets and the reforms in the administration, the judicial system, and in the energy sector, the Ukraine has still not fulfilled the EU’s requirements in four areas. These include the controversial 10-year ban on log exports introduced on 1 November 2015.
