EU Commission taking Poland to Court for felling

01.08.2017 −

The EU Commission is bringing legal action against Poland before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) over the timber harvesting measures in the Bialowieza National Park. The Commission will also be calling upon the Court to stop the felling immediately with the aid of a writ of injunction.

This was reported by the Commission on 13 July after Poland had been threatened with the legal action several times. Most recently on 27 April, the EU Commission had urged Poland to terminate the felling operations within the space of a month. At that time the EU Commission had shortened the term from two weeks to one on the grounds of the ongoing harvesting activities. The infringement proceedings against Poland had been initiated by the EU Commission in June 2016.
