DOC holds out prospect of reductions in customs duties

21.02.2020 −

In a provisional decision on 4 February, the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) is holding out the prospect of a reduction in the antidumping and countervailing duties for sawn softwood products. According to US media, the currently applicable, average rate of 20.23 % of the invoice value could be reduced to 8.21 %. A final decision, with which the future company-specific rates of duty will then be set as well, is apparently not going to be taken until August, however. On the basis of this latest specification, the rates of duty levied on West Fraser Timber since 28 December 2017, for example, would fall from the present 23.6 % to 9.1 %. For Canfor there could be a reduction from the present 20.5 % to 4.6 %.

The basis for the latest decision was an administrative examination of the customs duties on 1 April 2019 in accordance with the provisions of Section 351.213 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
