Beech lumber exports continue to recover

27.09.2021 −

In the second quarter German sawmills and timber trading companies exported 139,302 m³ beech lumber, representing an increase of 27%. The beech lumber export volume is thus almost identical to the volume of the first quarter. In the first three months of the current year, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) had recorded an increase of 10% vis à vis the preceding year to 139,620 m³.

As in the first quarter, in the second quarter beech lumber suppliers also benefited either from the revival or ongoing high demand on overseas markets. With regard to exports to China, a 28% rise to 44,202 m³ ensues for the period from April to June. In the first three months of the year, exports had increased by +28% to a volume meanwhile corrected from 44,160 m³ to 43,704 m³. When assessing beech lumber deliveries to China, however, the above-average decline recorded last year is to be taken into account. Due to Corona, exports in the second quarter of 2020 dropped by 19% to 34,461 m³, thus reaching a low point. A comparison with beech lumber deliveries to China during second quarters of previous years, however, shows that the volume of beech lumber exported in the second quarter of 2021 was at an above-average level. From 2013-2019 exports in the second quarter fluctuated between 37,629 m³ (2016) and 43,912 m³ (2014).
