Regressive demand for softwood-sawlog assortments

The Austrian sawmilling industry has recently been registering a reduction in receipts of orders as well as in the volume of sawn-softwood sales. Owing to production cuts and an adequate supply, demand for softwood sawlogs is slack at the moment. With the exception of Upper Austria, current demand can be satisfied with the supply from damaged-wood clearance operations. Prices were mostly rolled over in October 2022. For assortments with smaller dimensions, the lower price range is being dictated by the higher prices for industrial softwood. Prices for pine and larch are stable. Whereas demand for larch has decreased in Germany recently, it remains high in Austria. Even for weaker log dimensions, prices of over 100 €/fm ex forest road can be achieved for larch in most cases.“
