Spain: building starts decrease by 21% in 2020

In 2020, building starts in Spanish housing construction decreased by 21% to 75,820 units. According to the Spanish Ministry for Construction, declines in the double-digit percentage range compared to the respective figures of the preceding months were recorded in almost every individual month of 2020. The most severe decline occurred in April (-41% to 4,963 units). Only in December was an increase recorded (+19% to 6,674 units).

Completions developed along inconsistent lines in the individual months. Increases were recorded in January (+29% to 5,499 units), February (+30% to 6,696 units), March (+31% to 6,232 units), June (+26% to 7,482 units), July (+22% to 7,811 units), August (+8% to 4,933 units), September (+55% to 6,232 units), October (+21% to 8,836 units) and November (+1% to 7,736 units). Decreases, by contrast, were recorded for building starts in April (-48% to 3,010 units), May (-19% to 5,027 units) and December (-26% to 6,210 units). Over the entire year, 77,531 living units were completed, representing an increase of 8%.
