Wood industry turnover above previous year’s figure

04.06.2020 −

Following slightly negative development in 2019 (1.8% to €17.017bn) and the increase achieved in January (+5.0% to €1.328bn), in February total turnover of the German wood industry was also slightly above the preceding year’s figure. According to statistics issued by the Hauptverband der Deutschen Holzindustrie (HDH) which are compiled on the basis of figures supplied by the Federal Statistical Office, sector turnover improved by 1.0% to €1.379bn. This slight rise, however, is exclusively due to the 2.0% increase to €1.035bn in domestic business. Export turnover, in contrast, declined by 2.1% to €344.5m. In February 2019 sector turnover improved by 4.5% vis à vis the preceding year. At that time export business (+5.1%) developed along stronger lines than domestic business (+4.3%).

Whilst in January all segments had contributed to the increase in turnover, in February the sawmill industry slid into the red (total: -5.6% to €374.9m). Domestic construction-related business increased turnover by 3.8% to €481.9m. Consistent increases, in contrast, were recorded for the wood-based panels industry (total: +3.6% to €394.6m) and the wood packaging segment (total: +5.7% to €66.2m).

Accumulated over the first two months, total turnover in the German wood industry increased by 2.9% vis à vis the previous year to €2.707bn (domestic: +2.5% to €1.998bn, export: +3.9% to €709.2m).
