US Housing Starts grew by 18.6% in January

In the USA, housing starts in the twelve-month period up to and including January increased by 18.6% to 1.230m units compared with the twelve-month period to December. According to preliminary data published by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Washington DC, the number of single-family home starts has increased by 25.1% to 926,000 units. At 289,000 units, housing starts in apartment buildings were 4.0 % higher than in the same month of the previous year.

Building permits increased by 1.4 % to 1.345m units. A decrease in the number of single-family homes approved (-2.1 % to 812,000 units) was offset by an increase in permits for apartments in two to four (+37.8 % to 51,000) and multi-family homes (+4.8 % to 482,000 units).

The number of housing completions grew by 27.6 % to 1.244m units in the twelve-month period up to and including January. The number of completed single-family houses (914,000 units) and apartments in multi-family houses (327,000 units) increased by the same amount.
