US housing starts also decrease in February

The number of housing starts in the USA during the twelve months up to and including February decreased by 10.3% vis à vis the adjusted January figures, to 1.421m units. According to construction statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development this was 9.3% below the figure recorded for February 2020 (1.567m units). In January, housing starts had declined by 6.0% compared to the preceding month. Housing starts declined in construction of both detached houses (-8.5% to 1.040m units) and multi-family houses (-14.5% to 372,000 units).

In a twelve-month comparison, building approvals up to February fell by 10.8% to 1.682m units. However, an increase of 17.0% vis à vis the comparative month of the preceding year was achieved. In January, building approvals increased by 10.7% compared to the previous month (1.704m units). Approvals decreased for detached houses (-10.0% to 1.143m units) as well as for living units in two to four-family houses (-21.4% to 44,000 units) and multi-family houses (-11.6% to 495,000 units).
