Sharp growth in sales volume achieved by Stora Enso

The Wood Products division of Stora Enso sold 1.247m m³ of sawnwood and wood products during the course of the second quarter. This equates to an increase of 13.5% compared to the corresponding period in the preceding year and +12.0% against the first quarter. According to the quarterly and half-year report published on 21 July, as in the previous quarter, the division benefited from well above-average demand on the markets within Europe and in North America as well as from significantly higher selling prices across the whole product range.

On the basis of information from the company, the focus that had been placed on large-scale commercial construction projects some considerable time ago has proven to be an advantage. Deliveries to 670 projects were carried out in the period under review, 4% more than in the same quarter of last year. The average project size increased 20% as well. In order to continue to cater to the demand, the group is currently investing in enlarging its cross-laminated timber (CLT) capacity. A fourth CLT works is also being built in Ždírec, Czech Republic, by the end of 2022. The annual 100,000 m³ planned for this facility will raise the group’s own annual CLT capacity to 390,000 m³.
The higher sold volumes and prices enabled sales revenue for the quarter to be boosted by 37.7% to €477m. The key performance figures were several times higher than last year due to the considerably higher profit margins. EBITDA, for example, was almost trebled to €111m, and EBIT almost quadrupled to €100m. The EBIT margin rose from 7.4% to 20.9%. Return on operating capital (ROOC) reached a new record in the period under review at 65.8%.
