The building materials group Saint-Gobain has now completed the sale process initiated in November for the German building materials distribution business operating under the name Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland GmbH (SGBDD). The buyer is Stark Group A/S, which until now has only been active in Scandinavia. Both companies signed a sale agreement for SGBDD in mid-May, which is expected to take effect in the second half of the year following approval by the European competition authorities. The transaction is based on a total valuation of €335m.

In 2018, SGBDD generated sales of €1.924bn and an operating profit of €21m, according to Saint-Gobain. The company currently employs around 5,000 people at its 220 branches. For the last twelve months to April 2019, the Stark Group estimates SGBDD sales of around €2bn and adjusted EBITDA of €48 million.

With a total of 4,600 employees at 186 locations in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Greenland, the Stark Group generated sales of around € 2.2bn and adjusted EBITDA of € 101m in the 2017/2018 financial year. With the planned transaction, the company intends to expand its activities in the direction of Central Europe and thus approximately double its business volume.
