Germany: Building approvals also increase in March

In March approvals were granted for the construction of 27,304 dwellings in new and existing residential and non-residential buildings in Germany. This corresponds to an increase of 3.9% vis à vis the comparative month of the preceding year. In February approvals granted rose by 9.3% to 24,318 units. The number of approvals granted in January (27,018 units) fell only just short of the number of approvals granted in the preceding year. Accumulated over the first three months, according to preliminary data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) a total of 78,640 units was approved, an increase of 4.0%. Higher numbers of approvals recorded in a first quarter over the past ten years had only occured in 2016 (84,789 units) and 2017 (79,151 units). In 2014 and 2015 approvals had been at just under 65,000 units. From 2011 to 2013, between 49,000 and 55,400 units were approved. In the first quarter of 2010 Destatis recorded just under 40,000 approvals.

Approvals granted for dwelling units in new residential buildings increased by 3.8% to 68,257 units in the first quarter of 2020. Approval figures for dwellings in multi-family houses also rose at a single-digit rate. The number of approved detached houses remained stable. With regard to semi-detached houses, the number of living units approved was up 11.3% vis à vis last year.
