08.05.2019 −

The German DIY market increased its sales in the first quarter by 10.5 % to € 4.15bn. According to figures presented last Friday by the German Home Improvement, Building and Gardening Association (BHB), like-for-like sales also rose by a substantial 9.9 %.

In January, business was initially similar to the previous year, with sales up 0.3 % to € 1.16bn. In March, growth accelerated even further, rising by 18 % to € 1.78bn.

In Austria and Switzerland, growth was similar to that in Germany. The BHB also refers to the Total Store Reporting of GfK for these two markets. Accordingly, sales in Austria increased by 13.3% to € 520.8m in the first quarter. Like-for-like sales rose by 12.6%. In Switzerland, DIY store and garden center operators generated sales of € 621.2m in the first three months, an increase of 10.1%. On a like-for-like basis, sales here were 8.8 % higher than in the same period of the previous year.
