Building approvals rise only slightly in May

Following a 4.4% decline in April, in May building approvals for living units in new residential buildings in Germany rose by 1.8% to 28,199 units. In January, the number of approvals had remained stable. In February and March, the respective figures of the preceding year were exceeded by 23.9% and 36.7% respectively. According to the figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on 15 July, in May approvals for living units in semi-detached and multi-family houses increased by 21.7% to 2,472 units and by 6.9% to 17,141 units. The number of approved detached houses, in contrast, declined by 6.6% to 7,070 units.

Accumulated over the first five months, approvals for living units in new residential buildings amounted to 137,199 units, a 10.7% increase. Growth in the double-digit percentage range was recorded in the case of detached houses (+14.5% to 42,325 units) and living units in semi-detached houses (+43.6% to 13,782 units). Approvals for living units in multi-family houses increased by 5.6% to 76,388 units. With regard to new and existing residential and non-residential buildings construction of 157,937 living units was approved, representing a rise of 11.3%.
