Building approvals 5.9% short of last year’s figure

30.05.2019 −

In March building approvals for dwellings in new residential buildings in Germany declined by 5.9% vis à vis the comparative month of the preceding year to 23,106 units. The decrease recorded in February (-13.1%) therefore continued, albeit to a lesser extent. In January (+9.1 %) the preceding year’s figure had still been exceeded.

According to the figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on 20 May, decreases were recorded in the number of approvals granted for detached houses (-1.3% to 7,559 units) as well as living units in semi-detached (-8.9% to 1,704 units) and multi-family houses (-6.4% to 13,334 units). Approvals granted for dwellings in the context of building measures relating to existing buildings, at 2,727 units, fell 16.3% short of the preceding year’s figure. A total of 26,277 approvals were granted for dwelling units in new and existing residential and non-residential buildings. This represents a reduction of 7.5%.
