Austrian timber industry expanding abroad

15.03.2018 −

There have meanwhile been at least ten transactions since 2015 in which Austrian companies in the sawmilling and gluelam timber industry have played a role as investors. In the preceding years, however, there had only been news of scattered takeovers by Austrian businesses. The main players in the last three years were Binderholz group and Hasslacher group with five and two takeovers respectively. Mayr-Melnhof Holz, Pfeifer Group, and Schweighofer group each completed one takeover as well.

By far the greatest regional focus of the takeovers was on Germany where a total of six major transactions have taken place since August 2015 involving the sale of around nine individual companies to Austrian businesses. As such, a considerable part of the consolidation process in the central European sawmilling and gluelam timber industry in the last few years can be attributed to Austrian investors.
