Sharp decline in approvals for detached houses

In October, building approvals for living units in new residential buildings in Germany were 1.8% below the preceding year’s figure at 25,465 units. Building approvals thus declined for the third consecutive month. In the months prior, stable development or increases had alternated with declining approvals. According to figures issued by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) decreased approvals in the case of detached houses (-14.1% to 6,888 units) and living units in residential homes (-15.9% to 636 units) could not be fully offset by increased approvals for living units in semi-detached houses (+6.0% to 2,466 units) and multi-family houses (+4.4% to 15,475 units).

Accumulated over the first ten months, approvals for living units in new residential buildings increased by 3.6% to 269,355 units compared to the corresponding period in the preceding year. Approvals for detached houses (79,570 units) and living units in multi-family houses (155,524 units) increased at the same rate. In new and existing residential and non-residential buildings, a total of 312,017 (299,378) living units were approved for construction, corresponding to an increase of 4.2%.
