More than 300,000 living units constructed in 2020

In 2020, completions of living units in Germany increased by 4.6% vis à vis the preceding year to 306,376 units. The 300,000 mark with regard to living units in new and existing residential and non-residential buildings was thus exceeded again for the first time since 2001 (326,187 units). According to a statement issued on 27 May by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of completed living units in new residential buildings increased by 5.0% to 268,774 units. Destatis also recorded increases in the single-digit percentage range for detached houses (+4.1% to 87,275 units) as well as living units in semi-detached houses (+6.0% to 20,472 units) and multi-family houses (+7.2% to 153,377 units). In the context of building measures relating to existing buildings, 32,607 living units were completed - representing an increase of 1.2%. Estimated construction costs for completed living units in new residential buildings increased by 9.6% to €49.2bn.

In the west of Germany, 251,259 living units were completed in new and existing residential and non-residential buildings, corresponding to an increase of 5.5%. In the east of Germany, completions increased only slightly to 55,117 units.
