Deutsche Messe and VDMA cancel Ligna after all

The Ligna trade fair, which had already been pushed back from its usual date in May to 27 September to 1 October back in early November 2020, will not be able to take place as planned after all. At a joint meeting held on the evening of 19 April, the Woodworking Machinery Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and Deutsche Messe decided to scratch the in-person event. By way of explanation, the organisers pointed to ongoing uncertainty surrounding potential travel and social distancing restrictions and the resulting loss of key visitor groups. This uncertainty is creating untenable investment risks for exhibitors that would have had to start designing stands, including machinery installation, and making travel and hotel plans in the next few weeks.

Postponing the Ligna again, for instance to May 2022, was not an option because of interactions with the next scheduled event in May 2023. The organisers had already ruled this out in recent weeks in the event that the in-person fair had to be cancelled. Rather than a physical event, Deutsche Messe will now likely hold a digital fair at the same time as the Ligna was scheduled to happen in late September. A Ligna conference is to be staged in Rosenheim, Germany in the early summer of 2022 as well.
