USA: incoming orders increase again

The clearly positive development concerning incoming orders recorded by US furniture manufacturers in the residential sector since June has continued in the new year. According to the monthly survey conducted by consultancy company Smith Leonard incoming orders in January rose by 27% vis à vis the preceding year to US$2.902bn, thus achieving growth in the double-digit percentage range for the eighth time successively. Following an increase of 30% in June, growth had accelerated further in July (+39%), August (+51%), September (+43%) and October (+40%). The growth rate had then slowed to 17% in November. Already in December, an increase of 27% had been achieved again. Orders in hand increased further in January, soaring 177% to US$6.469bn. The unusually high value already recorded for a considerable period is attributed to shortages in the supply of materials as well as delays in the delivery of imported goods.

Turnover increased by 7% to US$2.408bn in January. Following declines in March (-11%), April (-50%), May (-31%) and June (-7%) and then stable development in July, an increase had been achieved again for the first time in August (+3%). Growth in the single-digit percentage range had also been recorded in September (+4%), October (+8%), November (+3%) and December (+5%).
