Ikea aiming for sharp rise in number of new stores

23.10.2020 −

In spite of the continuing shift in sales revenue towards online business, matching reports by the BBC and Financial Times say that the IKEA group is planning to open roughly 50 facilities worldwide for the new business year 2020/2021 (31 August). Around 30 of them are to be accounted for by the IKEA group’s Ingka Group, which is already the biggest franchisee of Inter Ikea Systems. The remaining 20 new stores are planned for superordinate group companies or the eleven external franchisees. A major share of the new facilities is planned in the form of the small-format concept developed over the last few years. Such stores are located predominantly in city centres or shopping centres.

A total of 26 new stores were opened in the last business year 2019/2020, raising the number of Ikea retail stores to 445 worldwide. Through the “Ikea Retail” division, Ingka Group is represented with a total of 378 stores in 30 countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Russia, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, mainland China, India, Australia). The company also operates distribution centres for supplying the Ikea branches, planning studios in city centres as well as fulfilment centres and customer distribution centres (CDC) for dispatching goods ordered online.
