Howdens not fully recovered from turnover declines yet

The positive development in demand recorded since the third quarter for Howden Joinery Group (Howdens) continued in November. According to a trading update, turnover in the Howden Joinery UK depots division increased by 18.8% in the reporting period 12 (1 to 28 November); on a like-for-like basis, the increase amounted to 17.2%. In the first half year, by contrast, turnover in Great Britain dropped by 29.0% to £453.4m. As the year progressed, turnover then successively increased. For the period 1-12, a decline of 5.1% nevertheless ensues.

Howdens has not provided any information concerning the development of activities outside of Great Britain. The company operates 25 kitchen studios in France and two in Belgium. There are presently 741 stores in Great Britain. Howdens now expects pre-tax profits in the 2020 financial year to exceed the upper end of the current forecast by approximately 10%. Previously, the company had anticipated pre-tax profits in a range of £123-152m.
